Maine Bass and Pike Fishing: Now is the time!!!

Sweet Summertime is here in Maine! As we roll into the dog days and the rivers warm, our focus shifts from Landlocked Salmon and Brook trout to Bass and Pike on the fly on the Androscoggin River. Purists my scoff at the idea, until they hook their first hefty Smallmouth on a topwater fly, or witness a 10 plus pound Pike T-bone a large streamer right at the boat.

While temps on trout waters across the state approach the 70 degree mark, we give the trout and salmon a rest. And shift our focus to fly fishing for Bass and Pike which provides tons of action for our guests in a sustainable manner. The topwater (dryfly) conditions for these species simply couldn’t be any better right now. Drop us a line and get out and enjoy a day of Sweet Summertime on a River in Maine!

Coming to a River in Maine: Boulder Boat Works

By late April I will be guiding many of my 2011 trips from my brand new Pro Guide drift boat, from the good folks out at Boulder Boat Works. I have been talking to the guys at Boulder Boats for at least three years now about their unique and modern take on driftboat materials and design. The guys at Boulder are working on the hull as I type, and should be complete by mid-late April. To say I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new drift boat would be a huge understatement!
….As for my raft? I have no plans to sell “Big Blue” my 14 foot NRS raft, it is, and still will be the right tool for many sections of Maine’s Rivers.

The new Boulder Boat Works Pro Guide will simply offer my anglers a higher level of comfort in a cleaner fishing platform. The new rig will also easily accommodate a small outboard for motoring out (instead of rowing out) on The East Outlet and Bingham sections of the Kennebec River.

For anyone in the Northeast who has wanted to take one of these for a spin, you have likely had no success tracking one down, until now… If you’d like to get out on the water and see what Boulder Boat Works Drift Boats are all about, give me a call to line up some time in the new rig! Maine Spring Fly Fishing: Variety is the Spice of Life

This spring has brought a amazing variety of Fly Fishing opportunities here in Maine. I have had the pleasure of fishing with a good variety of anglers and friends over the course of the last three weeks. We have seen some epic smelt runs, big March Brown hatches, too many Moose to count, and an unforgetable encounter with an overly aggressive loon trying to grab a brook trout away from a friend as he was landing it!

This is just the beginning, the next few weeks fishing should really kick in to gear. If you haven’t planned a Maine Fly Fishing Trip yet, you should!

Fly Fishing Report: Maine Salmon Fishing

Took some time to check out some Salmon Fishing waters in Southern Maine. If I can find the Smelt the Salmon are not far away… Fished three or four spots and saw very little signs of life or bait. Made a few casts and did hook and land one small Lake Trout that put up a good fight. Things will only get better from here!
